Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Teraz będzie Polska. Rok 1918' delves into the multifaceted path to Poland's independence, questioning whether the return of Poland to the European map after 123 years of partitions can be reduced to a single day. It highlights that the symbolic date of November 11th often overshadows the numerous events, the hard work of many individuals, mass demonstrations, armed actions, and political and diplomatic endeavors that preceded regaining independence. The exhibition spans 24 panels, presenting key events from the turbulent spring and final months of 1918, as well as the crucial autumn of that year, when regions like Cieszyn Silesia, Krakow, Galicia, Warsaw, Kingdom of Poland, Lviv, and Poznań celebrated their freedom. It also depicts the state of the war-torn, ruined country, marked by hunger, a raging epidemic, radicalized sentiments, and intense efforts to unify the Polish lands divided by the partitioning borders. Visitors can expect to see archival photographs, original posters, postcards, documents, and badges from the era. Images include scenes of Krakow liberating itself from Austrian occupation, Polish troops marching through Lublin, Warsaw streets on November 11th, battles with Ukrainians in Lviv, and large national demonstrations in Warsaw. The exhibition also captures everyday life in these cities. Personal accounts from witnesses, chroniclers, and diarists from that time are integrated, reflecting both the dramatic and joyful moments from 100 years ago, as well as the initial enthusiasm for freedom and the subsequent disappointment with the borders of the reborn state. The exhibition concludes with panels dedicated to the history of Warsaw's present-day districts, exploring their existence, development, and changes over the years. The sections on districts were prepared by historian Jarosław Zieliński, while the curator and originator of the entire exhibition is Tomasz Kuba Kozłowski. The exhibition was prepared by the History Meeting House as part of the city of Warsaw's celebrations for the 100th anniversary of regaining independence.
