Curatorial context

Inspired by Marshal Józef Piłsudski's words on respecting the past, the National Museum of Technology's exhibition, 'Z naszej ziemi, to znaczy Polski – In nostra terra, scilicet Polonia', celebrates the legacies of nineteen prominent Polish figures. These individuals were engineers, constructors, and inventors whose innovations have had a profound and often underestimated impact on world technology. Their projects found applications across diverse sectors, including automotive engineering, military applications, transportation, construction, and lighting. The exhibition highlights figures such as Rudolf Modrzejewski, known for designing bridges in the USA; Stefan Drzewiecki, a pioneer in submarines; Antoni Patek, founder of world-renowned watchmaking; Kazimierz Prószyński, credited with developing one of the world's first film cameras and films before the Lumière brothers; Tadeusz Marek, designer of influential car engines; Józef Kosacki, inventor of an effective mine detector; Ignacy Łukasiewicz, inventor of the first kerosene lamp; and Jan Szczepanik, the 'Genius from Galicia' and creator of the first bulletproof vest. The museum organizes this exhibition with the goal of raising awareness in Poland of these great patriots, many of whom are more recognized abroad than in their native country.
