Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam Invites Visitors to Explore Illusions This May Holiday
The Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam is set to host a series of engaging activities and special events during the May holiday, inviting visitors to delve into the fascinating world of artistic illusions and historical techniques. From interactive workshops for families to free entry for city residents, there are multiple opportunities to experience the museum this season.
Family Workshops: Create Your Own 3D Art
During the May holiday period, families can participate in unique 3D painting workshops. A museum educator will guide participants aged 8 and above through the steps of creating a three-dimensional artwork that appears to pop out from the surface. Each individual can take their finished painting home and capture a memorable photo with their creation.
These two-hour workshops are scheduled from April 19 to May 4, with the exception of April 26, running daily from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The cost is €10 per person, in addition to museum entry. Residents holding an Amsterdam Stadspas are eligible for complimentary workshop participation and museum admission. Due to limited space (maximum 16 participants), advance reservations are essential and can be made online via the Museum Rembrandthuis ticketing portal.
Free Museum Access for Amsterdam Residents
On April 28, the Rembrandt House Museum extends a special invitation to residents of Amsterdam, offering free admission. To take advantage of this opportunity, visitors must present proof of their Amsterdam home address upon arrival. This initiative is generously supported by Bader Philanthropies, honoring the 101st birthday of Alfred Bader (1924-2018), an American art collector and profound admirer of Rembrandt. Bader frequently loaned parts of his collection to museums, including the Rembrandt House.
A total of 375 complimentary entry tickets are available for this specific day. Visitors are strongly encouraged to reserve their tickets online in advance to guarantee entry, as availability is limited. Reservations can be made through the Museum Rembrandthuis online ticketing system.
Street Art Illusions Outside the Museum
In conjunction with the current exhibition, "The Illusionist: Samuel van Hoogstraten," the museum has commissioned two captivating illusionistic street artworks. Artists Bennie Brasco and Angel Louise have created optical 3D drawings installed directly in front of the museum, drawing inspiration from 17th-century artist Samuel van Hoogstraten’s work. These striking outdoor installations are expected to be visible for a few weeks, subject to weather conditions. A video showcasing the creation process and featuring artist Bennie Brasco is also available.
Ongoing Family-Friendly Experiences
Beyond these special May holiday events, the Rembrandt House Museum continuously offers engaging activities designed for younger visitors and families.
Explore with Rembrandt's Dog, Kwast
Children aged 6 to 12, accompanied by their parents or guardians, can embark on a free multimedia tour. This interactive journey through the museum is guided by Kwast, Rembrandt's playful dog, as participants help Rembrandt create his largest painting. Available daily during opening hours, this tour offers a unique and fun way to explore the artist's home. A small gift awaits participants at the end of their quest.
Discover Rembrandt's Painting and Etching Techniques
Visitors can also attend daily free demonstrations detailing how Rembrandt prepared his paints and produced his etchings. In Rembrandt's historic atelier, experts explain the materials and processes involved, from grinding pigments to preparing etching plates. Guests are invited to try mixing paint on a grinding stone and receive a print (either an etching or a postcard) to take home. These demonstrations run between 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM, with no prior reservations required.
These various events and ongoing activities offer diverse ways for visitors to connect with the art and life of Rembrandt.
