Discover Spring Holiday Activities at Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam
The historic Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam is inviting visitors to explore a range of engaging activities and a special exhibition during the upcoming spring holiday period. From February 15 to March 2, the museum, where Rembrandt lived and worked, offers interactive experiences for all ages, focusing on art, illusion, and the master's creative process.
Explore the Illusionist: Samuel van Hoogstraten Exhibition
Visitors can delve into the fascinating world of optical illusion with "The Illusionist. Samuel van Hoogstraten" exhibition. Samuel van Hoogstraten, a successful pupil of Rembrandt, was a master of deceiving the eye with paint and ink, creating works that seem to pop out in three dimensions. The exhibition showcases over fifty of his pieces, demonstrating how, centuries before digital manipulation, he could create compelling visual tricks. Families with children will find this exhibition particularly engaging, with opportunities to step into a life-sized perspective box and use a multimedia tour to uncover the secrets behind his captivating illusions.
Family Workshops and Creative Exploration
For those looking to get hands-on, the museum offers 3D Painting Workshops where participants can learn to create their own three-dimensional artwork. Guided by a museum educator, visitors aged 8 and up will paint an immersive scene and take their unique creation home. These workshops are scheduled from February 15 to March 2, daily from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Tickets for the workshop cost €7.50, in addition to museum entry, and can be reserved online through the Museum Rembrandthuis – online tickets portal.
Younger visitors can embark on a quest through the museum with the free Multimedia Tour featuring Rembrandt’s Dog, Kwast. Children aged 6 to 12, accompanied by an adult, can help Rembrandt create his largest painting ever, guided by the playful Kwast. This interactive tour is available daily during opening hours, with a small gift as a reward upon completion.
Experience Rembrandt's Artistic Process
Gain insight into Rembrandt’s working methods through daily free paint and etching demonstrations. In Rembrandt's authentic studio, visitors can discover how the artist prepared his paints, from grinding pigments like poisonous lead and cochineal to mixing them with linseed oil. Attendees can even try mixing paint on a grinding stone themselves. Additionally, the etching attic provides a step-by-step look at how Rembrandt created his detailed prints, revealing secrets like the appearance of Kwast in one of his etchings. Everyone attending the demonstration receives a print or postcard to take home. These demonstrations run between 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM daily, and no prior reservation is required.
These activities offer a unique opportunity to experience art and history in a vibrant, family-friendly setting.
