Autumn Holiday Adventures at Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam
The Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam invites visitors to experience a special program of activities this autumn holiday, running from October 18 to 26. The historic home and studio of the Dutch Master will offer a range of workshops, demonstrations, and tours designed for all ages, providing a unique glimpse into 17th-century life and art.
Inside the museum, the "THUIS. The feeling of home in contemporary art" exhibition explores the concept of 'home' through the eyes of thirteen contemporary artists, alongside Rembrandt himself. Visitors can see Rembrandt's own etchings depicting his students at work or his wife Saskia unwell, contrasted with modern interpretations such as Arash Fakhim's ceramic slippers, symbolizing a sense of belonging for family and guests.
Hands-On Creativity and Historical Insights
Throughout the autumn holiday, the museum will host engaging activities that allow visitors to connect directly with Rembrandt's artistic world. Children and adults can participate in "Etching at Rembrandt's home" workshops on October 19, 20, 22, 23, and 26. These sessions, held from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, teach the drypoint technique, allowing participants to create and take home two of their own prints. Suitable for ages 6 and up, the workshop costs €9.95 (excluding museum entry), with a reduced price of €2.50 for Stadspas holders. More information can be found on the Rembrandt House Museum website.
Daily demonstrations between 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM reveal how Rembrandt prepared his paints and created his etchings. Experts will explain the use of historical materials, from lead and cochineal to linseed oil, and even pig bladders. Visitors will also have the chance to mix paint on a grinding stone and receive a small print or postcard as a memento.
Families can embark on a free multimedia tour, "On the road with Rembrandt's dog Kwast," available daily during opening hours. This interactive quest guides children aged 6 to 12 and their guardians through the museum, helping Rembrandt create his grandest painting. Kwast, the artist's mischievous dog, serves as a playful guide, and participants receive a small gift at the end. No reservations are required for the multimedia tour or the demonstrations.
