Curatorial context

The DSH ON TOUR exhibition 'Flying over Warsaw. Photographs by Zbyszek Siemaszko from the 60s and 70s' presents a remarkable collection of aerial photographs taken by Zbyszek Siemaszko from 1965 to 1975. These images were captured in collaboration with the National Centre for Documentation of Historical Monuments and were featured in publications like 'Poland from a Bird's Eye View' and 'Warsaw from a Bird's Eye View', as well as the weekly 'Stolica'. The collection is now managed by Siemaszko's family, who maintain the 'Fotografia Siemaszkowie' studio. Siemaszko, a resilient photographer, enjoyed the adventure of aerial photography, using various planes and helicopters. He sought clear weather for his shots, often braving turbulent conditions to capture sharp, detailed images of Warsaw. His work during this period provides a valuable visual record of the city's development and urban landscape. Siemaszko's life was deeply intertwined with photography and documenting Warsaw. He served in the AK during WWII, documenting partisan life, and later worked as a photojournalist for several publications, including 'Stolica', for which he created covers for 222 issues. He also documented the reconstruction of Warsaw for the State Enterprise for Monumental Architecture Conservation. His mentorship under Edmund Kupiecki led him to join the Union of Polish Art Photographers. This exhibition, presented before the Municipal Cultural Centre in Józefów, offers a glimpse into Warsaw's past through the daring and detailed aerial perspectives of Zbyszek Siemaszko, highlighting his significant contribution to the photographic documentation of the city.
