This exhibition delves into the prolific photographic journey of Witold Marczewski, a figure described as a 'visionary from the beginning of the last century'. Spanning locations from the oil fields of Azerbaijani Baku to European cities like Istanbul, Paris, and Italian towns, as well as Polish locales, Marczewski consistently documented his surroundings with a camera. His extensive collection, comprising thousands of rolls of film and glass negatives, notably includes a significant portion of stereoscopic photographs, a popular format at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Curated by Anna Brzezińska and Barbara Roszuk-Galus, the exhibition presents over a hundred digitized photographs selected from a larger archive. These works offer a cross-section of Marczewski's output, encompassing landscape and architectural photography, press images of historical events like the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict and 1918 Kyiv protests, depictions of daily life, and portraits. The collection also features family snapshots and studio portraits, providing 'exciting impressions and amazing shots—especially for the times in which Witold Marczewski took his pictures'. The exhibition also explores two key aspects of Polish photography history: Marczewski's engagement with photographic technology and its advancements, and the significant, yet often overlooked, role of stereoscopic photography in bringing the world closer to the public, akin to the impact of television a century later. To enhance the viewer's experience of the stereoscopic images, lenticular film and modern printing techniques are employed to create a three-dimensional effect.
