Wiosna, lato, WOJNA… Warszawa 1939: Warsaw's Photography Exhibition on WWII's Defining Year

This exhibition commemorates the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II by exploring a pivotal year in the life of Warsaw and its inhabitants. Through approximately one hundred photographs, it captures the atmosphere of the capital in the final summer before the war and its first months, detailing the destruction and the struggle for survival.

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, "Wiosna, lato, WOJNA… Warszawa 1939" delves into the dramatic transformation of the Polish capital and its residents during a single, year-defining period. The exhibition questions whether the scale of the impending conflict and its impact on the city's fabric could have been truly imagined. It presents a narrative of the year the Second Polish Republic's world irrevocably ended. The exhibition is built around approximately one hundred photographs drawn from various collections, each offering a distinct perspective—official, private, and propagandistic. These images, accompanied by detailed descriptions identifying specific buildings and locations, are enriched with excerpts from diaries and memoirs, a chronological calendar of events, and rare amateur archival films documenting the early months of the occupation. The visual content includes works by photojournalists from the "Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny," American correspondent Julien Bryan, Home Army soldier Sylwester "Kris" Braun, and German journalist Wilhelm Haase-Lampe. The exhibition is structured into four parts: the daily life of Varsovians before the war, illustrating the "last" summer's unsettling rhythm; Bryan's powerful images of the siege of Warsaw, depicting bomb-damaged structures and the suffering of civilians; photographs of Warsaw in ruins after the capitulation, highlighting destruction that occurred early in the conflict; and finally, images of German soldiers amidst the ruins and the nascent signs of life under occupation, concluding with a German journalist's documentation of the northern district before the ghetto's formation. By juxtaposing images of the city on the brink of war with those from its initial months, the exhibition underscores the total scale of destruction and the immense effort invested in survival and eventual reconstruction. It serves as a powerful reminder of Warsaw's resilience, a city condemned to death but which today lives, develops dynamically, and continues to fascinate with its turbulent past.
